You know we’re getting closer and closer to a highly anticipated record’s release when the leaks come flowing and the mad dash is on to be the first post the leaked tracks. Yeah well, I may not always be the first to get my hands on these leaks but at least I admit it. I like to take some time to actually listen to the song, take it in, let it run a couple of laps inside my brain before posting. Do you know what I mean?
With that said, General Patton is a track off of the upcoming Big Boi record Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son Of Chico Dusty coming at you on the 6th of July. We’ve heard Shutterbug and nodded in approval with its earnest homage to the early days of hip-hop. Patton is an exercise in what the Dirty South sound is all about. You got your boom-bap percussion with a notable emphasis on the boom part and the rest is all Big Boi. In my opinion, he and his partner in crime, Andre 3000 are two of the more underrated rappers in hip-hop. Let this track soak in a little bit and you will surely see where I’m coming from. This record is going to be good…

While we wait for the next slice of heaven out of Stankonia, Big Boi has come out of hiding and will finally unveil his true solo debut record entitled Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son Of Chico Dusty! One thing is guaranteed above all else when it comes to Andre and Big Boi, the quality will be top notch. The duo have set the bar tremendously high throughout their illustrious career so naturally any solo offerings had better be up to snuff. I’d say the new single Shutterbug fits the criteria just fine.
Produced by Scott Storch (back from the dead, it seems), Shutterbug catches the ear with its rattling bass, boom-bap percussion and synth bleeps and blurps. By the time Big Boi unleashes his trademark delivery, you’re already in. Throw in a catchy chorus or two and you’ve got yourself a track that could rival B.O.B’s smash Nuttin On You for the song you’ll be hearing the most out of every boomin’ system this summer. It’s definitely refreshing to hear some mainstream hip-hop come down the pike these days that isn’t afraid to be catchy, accessible and most importantly single-worthy. Let’s hope this is merely the opening act to what will eventually result in the release of a new Outkast record in 2010!
