Everyone’s favourite post-punk nihilists are bringing the force with a new record. Their first since 2006’s Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell will be called Feast Of Fools. Me saying that I cannot wait for this should be considered an understatement. No one and I mean no one brings it like these guys do. New wave, industrial, metal, whatever you want to call them, they own it. To top it off, the band will be playing US shows including one right here in New York! Boo ya!!!
It’s finally happening! The Specials are coming back to the States! When news of the ska legends’ reunion first made waves, it was bittersweet for those of us who aren’t fortunate to live in Merrie Olde. The band had gotten together to play some shows and festivals and reports from these performances were glowing. Granted the friction between the band and songwriter/majordomo, Jerry Dammers, has still not been rectified, this wasn’t enough to subdue the excitement surrounding the return of one of the 80s finest UK pop acts.
As a fan who never got the chance to see the band live during the heyday, I’m simply chuffed at the news that the band is playing this year’s Coachella Festival in Indio, CA. Not only that, the band will also be playing a show at…Terminal 5! Yup, the band will be playing a show here in NYC on 21 April! Tickets go on sale this Friday so if you’re ready for some hot and heavy skankin’, you will make sure to be at Terminal 5 for what promises to be a memorable show!
It was only about a week or so ago where I let you guys know about the new compilation/mixtape/record that will be on 16 February from the almighty Wu Tang Clan. If you thought Clap 2010 was a banger, here goes another track to whet your appetite. This one is called Steppin 2 Me and features The Genius/GZA, Inspectah Deck and Masta Killa. Another very cool track that is very different from the dank and dirty pieces we’d come to expect and love from these guys in the last 17 years or so. It’s good to see the spark hasn’t completely gone from these guys yet and they’ll follow this up with a proper record sooner rather than later.
“the frightening sound of laughter
so close to tasting rapture
denied for so long
like a thief in the night
you took all of me
and gave it all away”
April Fool’s Day isn’t for another three and a half months but for New York electro-popsters The Mystic Underground, it’s a day looked on with much dead and dismay as evidenced by their new single April Fool’s Day. A slice of danceable electronic pop madness replete with orchestral hits that I had thought died out in the nineties and a lovely break in the middle that offers a bit of subtle revelry amidst the lament.
“the time for revelation’s gone now
we can stand on our own feet
do you believe in power
while they march in their divisions
we’ll go dancing on their dreams
While the empires crash down”
Fresh off the release of their debut full-length Midnight Of The Century, we have the promotional film for the single Flight Of The Demoiselles. Yes, friends, it’s New York’s own Blacklist. A great video that does a great song justice. The band looks dashing, the production looks first-rate and it’s safe to say the band is well on their way. Good show, boys!
I dare say it’s not every day one comes across a band born, bred and based out of the great state of Connecticut. Oftentimes, the more talented musicians play out enough times before realising their time is much better utilised by simply packing up shop and moving to New York to try their luck. I came across a simply wonderful new band via a MySpace friend request called Fancy Mammals…and they’re from Connecticut! Really!
Their new single Hold On definitely forced me to do a double-take. A rather brief tune clocking in at just under three minutes, the duo manages to stuff a great hook, some very slick production and a rhythm worthy to blast out of your car. Think of these guys as a bouncier sounding and infinitely more interesting version of The Postal Service. The single is currently available on I-Tunes so don’t forget to pick it up!
It’s about time. Mr. Vincent Frank, better known to the world as Frankmusik is finally headed to the States as part of the Perez Hilton package tour which will also include Ida Maria, NY’s own Semi-Precious Weapons and one of my faves, Ladyhawke! Here are the dates! Yeah!
12/09/2009 9:30 Club, Washington, DC
13/09/2009 Theatre of The Living, Philadelphia, PA
14/09/2009 House of Blues, Boston, MA
16/09/2009 The Fillmore, New York, NY
New York…how much do I love thee. Allow me to count the ways. Too many talented bands to count all climbing over themselves to drink from the fountain of success. It’s poetry in motion. I’ve got a bit of a treat for you Suede-heads! You know how much I love you all. Today I’ve got a new brand new track for you hot off the presses from yet another collective that deserve your attention and your hard earned dollar. Their name is Electric Chariot and they are a pretty spiffy electronic rock band from Brooklyn AND the Bronx. Yes, they are from the Boogie-Down and Crooklyn so you know they’re hardcore.
Led by the original duo of singer, Victoria Schwartz and producer/synth guru, Dennis Natal, EC are preparing to unleash the bumrush this spring with a new record which will be the follow-up to last year’s I-Tunes only release, Signs And Illusions. The band was so nice to take the time out of thei busy schedule and send me a track which could very well end up on the new record. Nothing Matters is a scintillating groove attack that burns slow. With a sultry and inviting lead vocal riding shotgun with the jagged guitars, this sure sounds like a winner to me! This is a band to keep an eye on, ladies and gentlemen so lend them your ears. Once you do that, go on and check them out on MySpace and tell them I sent you!
